Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is a feminist media critic, public speaker and Canadian. She was the creator of Feminist Frequency the website which provides commentary and videos on portrayals of women in popular media. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic and blogger. She was the co-creator and the director executive of Feminist Frequency, a not-for-profit educational website which explores the portrayals of women in popular media narratives. In her efforts to dispel the myths about women and popular culture, she is also working to raise issues related to harassment targeted at women as well as other classes of people in the online environment. With a master's in social and political thought from York University Sarkeesian is also a much sought-after public speaking engagement and has given speech at TEDxWomen's XOXO Festival as well as the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. At a young age Sarkeesian was interested in gender issues and feminist thinking. When she was still in school, in 2009 she created her Feminist Frequency web site. She had a plan to begin a web series on gender representation in video games. She found herself in the middle of an online harassment campaign. The attack did have been a hindrance, rather it strengthened her determination as a feminist critic of media. The award-winning journalist has received numerous accolades due to her important contributions to the field of feminism. Anita Sarkeesian, a media critic who has won a variety of prizes and founded Feminist Frequency An educational, non-profit group that investigates the way women are portrayed in popular culture narratives.
